Uschi Keszler Presents the Pennies in Action Fund

Voorhees Red, White, and Blue Team Challenge 2012

The school will be holding their second month-long fundraiser in February.

Voorhees Red, White, and Blue Team Challenge 2011

Sixth grade students from the Red, White, and Blue teams from Voorhees Middle School, Voorhees, New Jersey spent the month of February raising funds for PIA. Their inspiration came from one of their teachers, who is a breast cancer survivor and patient of Dr. Czerniecki. They decided to have a fundraiser to help raise funds for his research for a breast cancer vaccine.

The students recycled water bottles, and then put a Pennies in Action label onto the bottles. They came up with a variety of ways to raise money. They shoveled snow, babysat, did chores, gathered spare change, and discussed the project with family members and gathered donations. They also gave their allowances and raided their piggy banks! They did not go door to door soliciting donations.

During the last week of the fundraiser, they organized a basketball shoot off in Social Studies class. Students paid $1.00 for three shots into the basket. Each time they made a shot their name was entered into a raffle to win either Dunkin Donuts or Target gift cards.  Everyone had fun and they were all amazed by what they had collected in the end: $2,021.67. At the completion of the fundraiser, Uschi visited the school to meet the students.

Next year there are plans to expand the fundraiser into the seventh and eight grades - we can't wait to see how they do!
