The Wallingford Five Since January, 2009, five young ladies in grades 7 & 8 have been raising funds for Pennies in Action. This is how they started. It began as a school project. Two years ago, the father of a student at their school died. Since then, they have been doing everything they can to help that family. Recently, the mother of that student decided to give $300 each to about 10 groups in the school, to help charities. Her requirement was that the groups must double that amount. The money was given to different groups in 5th, 7th, and 8th grade. Kelsey had heard about Pennies in Action from her mother, who works at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The Periop Nurses started raising funds for Pennies as a Thanksgiving Charity event, and have turned it into a continuing project (See information on the EVENTS page). Kelsey and her friends Jackie, Bailey, Katie, and Becky picked Pennies for their charity. In Kelsey's words, "We decided to donate to Pennies in Action. All you need is pennies, so that's all we're going to ask for. Every penny counts! We hope to raise a lot of money for your charity." The girls came up with multiple ideas for raising money after having a brainstorming session in a visit with Uschi. Their efforts so far, have been: having a bake sale, taking donations, and having an empty soda bottle at their school's Science Fair (many teachers and parents donated). They have also put empty soda bottles in each classroom each month, with a reward for the class who raises the most money. February's winner was 4th grade, with $117.52! In return, their class and teacher got a dress down day - which is a fun thing because they normally have to wear uniforms, These ideas have already made $558 so far! They also have plans for selling t-shirts, having a raffle, and of course, still taking straight donations. These girls are amazing, and we applaud what they are doing, and what they are learning, and we give them our greatful thanks. Updates on their progress will be on our EVENTS page The Grand Total for the Wallingford 5 was $591.78!
